Requirements for Graduation in Basic Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

 

Training Courses

 

This includes forty sessions of the initial course, focusing on practical techniques and clinical work to familiarize students with analytical psychotherapy. This will consist of one class per week. Then, a thirty-session course introducing different psychoanalytic schools, along with simultaneous group discussion sessions on clinical cases, will be held. Finally, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the history and development of psychoanalysis, which will serve as an introduction for them to delve into more detailed and specific aspects of the advanced course. Additionally, during sixteen to twenty sessions, students will become familiar with Freud's theories, alongside group discussion sessions focusing on Freud's theories. These two theoretical and practical courses will be held simultaneously, with two classes per week. Achieving the desired level of performance and the possibility of continuing the training path depends on attending classes with less than twenty percent absenteeism and active participation. This will be assessed through feedback from the instructor of each course. Alongside participation, the method of engagement and interaction with group members is an important component of the evaluation. In each class, the instructor may introduce a project related to the topic being taught as the final project for the course. The implementation of this project will be part of the qualitative assessment of each individual in the respective class. Any candidate conducting clinical work must present at least one clinical case in each group discussion session.

 

Supervision

 

A minimum of fifty hours of supervision from members of the faculty, affiliated faculty members, or senior candidates of the Tehran Center for Psychoanalytic Studies; or supervision from outside the center that the progression committee can evaluate. Success in obtaining of acceptable level in supervision involves writing a clinical case and a letter from the supervisor confirming that the student has a basic understanding of analytical work on the cases they have collaborated on. After approval from the supervisor, the clinical case along with a descriptive letter will be presented to the progress committee for final approval. If a candidate in the Basic  course wishes to have a case-control to qualify for graduation in advanced Psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, they must submit a written request to the progression committee. The progression committee will review the request and make a decision. If necessary, the progression committee may correspond with the supervisor of the mentioned candidate to reach a decision.

 

Analytical Therapy

 

A minimum of one hundred hours of therapy, at least once a week, with a member of the faculty, affiliated faculty members, senior candidates, or outside Anaylists who can be evaluated by members of the faculty.

 

Important Note

 

In all training fields, the analytical therapy hours of the candidates are calculated since they enter the training process at the center. Personal analytical therapy hours before entering the center will not be considered.

Advanced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program

Requirements for Graduation in Advanced Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

 

Training courses

 

These courses include journal clubs and discussion sessions about clinical cases (two classes per week, one theoretical and one case conference). To graduate, candidates must complete at least 8 article-reading courses out of a total of 12. Those candidates who wish to serve as faculty members or instructors at the center, must have completed all 12 journal club courses or served as a instructor or teaching assistant (TA) in the mentioned courses. After meeting these conditions with the approval of the progression committee, candidates will be eligible to complete the training courses. Success in achieving the minimum required hours is conditional on attending classes with less than twenty percent absence until graduation and active participation in classes, which will be determined by the instructor's feedback. In addition to participation, an important evaluation method is whether the candidates have studied the topics of each session or not, and how they interact with the group. In each class, the instructor will introduce a project related to the course topic as the final project proposal to the students. The implementation of this project is part of the qualitative evaluation of each individual in the respective class. Any candidate conducting clinical work is required to present at least one case in each case conference.

 

Supervision

 

If a candidate receives weekly supervision for their case-control: a minimum of 150 hours of supervision for 3 cases (50 hours per case) from members of the faculty or affiliated faculty members or psychoanalysts outside the institution who can scientifically evaluate that person is necessary. If a candidate receives supervision every other week for their case-control: a minimum of 160 hours of supervision for 4 cases (40 hours per case) from members of the faculty or affiliated faculty members or psychoanalysts outside the institution who can to scientifically evaluate that person is necessary. Each case-control must have been treated at least twice a week, and one hour of supervision must be received for every two hours of treatment for each client. Meeting the requirements includes a letter from the supervisor to confirm the analytical work done with the collaborator and writing down cases at the start of treatment and every six months until ready to meet the requirements. To obtain the final requirement, one clinical case must have reached the mid-treatment phase. After obtaining the supervisor's approval, along with the mentioned writings, it will be presented to the progress committee for final approval to obtain the requirements.

 

Note 1: Under special circumstances (for example, in cases where case-control cuts off 20% of their final treatment sessions or reduces the frequency of sessions), with the approval of the progress committee, the supervisor can accept the relevant case, provided that if receiving weekly supervision, they have visited at least 80 hours of clients and received at least 40 hours of supervision, and if receiving supervision once a week, they have visited at least 120 hours of the desired case and received at least 30 hours of supervision.

 

Note 2: Candidates have the option to receive group supervision for up to one of their case-controls, provided that the number of people present in the group is no more than 3. If a candidate receives group supervision for one of their case-controls, they must receive double the hours required for individual supervision.

 

Analytical therapy

 

250 hours, at least twice a week; or 150 hours twice a week and 150 hours once a week (a total of 300 hours) with one of the faculty members, affiliated faculty members, or psychoanalysts outside the institution who can scientifically evaluate that person is necessary. A letter from the relevant therapist stating the start date of treatment, session frequency, and total number of sessions is sufficient.

Comprehensive Psychoanalytic Training Program

Requirements for Graduation in Comprehensive Psychoanalytic Training Program

 

Training Courses

 

These courses include article-reading sessions based on what was mentioned for the advanced psychoanalytic psychotherapy, along with group discussions on clinical cases, consisting of two classes per week. To graduate, candidates must attend all classes according to the schedule determined by the training committee. Success in meeting the requirements depends on attending all classes with less than 20% absenteeism and active participation, which will be evaluated through feedback from the instructor of each class. In addition to participation, the method of engagement and interaction with group members is an important component of the evaluation. In each class, the instructor may introduce a project related to the topic being taught as the final project for the course. The execution of this project will be part of the qualitative assessment of each individual in the respective class. Any candidate conducting clinical work must present at least one clinical case in each case conferenc session.

 

Supervision

 

A minimum of two hundred hours of supervision from members of the faculty, or outside analysts who can be evaluated by members of the faculty is necessary. Supervision includes observing four clinical cases, each treated at least three times a week, and one hour of supervision for every three hours of treatment. Each of these four cases must have been visited for at least one hundred and fifty hours and received fifty hours of supervision for each case. Meeting the requirements includes a letter from the supervisor confirming the analytical work on the cases they have collaborated on, as well as writing clinical cases at the beginning of treatment and every six months until ready to meet the requirements. For final approval, a clinical case must have reached a good depth in the middle phase of treatment, after approval from the supervisor and with the written materials mentioned earlier presented to the progress committee for final approval.

 

Analytical Therapy

 

A minimum of four hundred and fifty hours and at least three times a week with a member of the faculty or outside therapist who can be evaluated by members of the faculty is necessary. A letter from the relevant therapist stating the start date of treatment, frequency of sessions, and total number of sessions is sufficient.
