“Beyond the Pleasure Principle” Symposium
The "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" symposium, organized by the Tehran Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in collaboration with the Siavoushan Psychology Center, was held on the 13rd and 14th of may 2021 in a virtual format. The motivation for holding this symposium was the centenary of the publication of Sigmund Freud's text “Beyond the Pleasure Principle.” In this symposium, prominent Iranian and non-Iranian figures presented their ideas and articles. Non-Iranian figures present at the symposium included: Mai Wegener (resident psychoanalyst in Berlin), Gregor Schöbel (professor at the Anna Freud Institute in Frankfurt), Neus Carbonell (resident Lacanian psychoanalyst in Barcelona), Claude-Noël Pickmann (resident Lacanian psychoanalyst in Paris), and Peter Widmer (one of the founders of the Freudian Psychoanalytic Society AFP). Additionally, multiple Iranian psychoanalysts and psychotherapists from various intellectual traditions presented their discussions, including Afsaneh Alisobhani, Houshang Giliaardi, Hassan Makaremi, Hadi Rahimi Danesh, Mahmoud Dehghani, Iraj Esmaeilpour Ghoochani, Soheila Kiani, Babak Roshanaie-Moghaddam, Mali Mann, Mehdi Khoryanian, and Nargess Sharifzadeh. Articles from members of the Tehran Center for Psychoanalytic Studies and the Siavushan Psychology Center were also read and discussed at this symposium, including Ali Pajoohandeh, Shima Gholamrezaei, Mojtaba Mehranfar, Ali Hadavand, Zahra Ahangaran, Vida Mobasher, Banafsheh Najafizadeh, Samira YazdaniNejad, Shirzad Babaei, Saeed Dabbagh, Mojtaba Arham Sadr, and Leila Behnia. At the end of the two-day symposium, Amirhossein Mahoozi, a professor of Persian literature and a scholar of Rumi's works, delivered a lecture titled “Death in the Mirror of Persian Poetry: Rumi, Hafez, and Saadi.”
The executive committee of this symposium consisted of Vida Mobasher, Afshan Gheshghaie, Leila Behnia, Sepideh Gholmohammadi, and Mojtaba Mehranfar. Additionally, some of the articles and presentations from this symposium were later published in book form with an introduction by Hossein Mojtahedi under the auspices of Abi Parsi Publishing.
